New in vWorkApp: Turn-by-turn navigation

vWorkApp now integrates with TomTom and Google’s navigation apps to provide ‘turn-by-turn’ navigation. If you haven’t heard of turn-by-turn navigation, it’s a map with voice instructions that guides you to an address (e.g. think these things).

The great thing about this for vWorkApp’s customers is that you now get this functionality right from your work schedule, and without needing to buy any extra hardware.

To access turn-by-turn navigation:

On the iPhone:

  1. On the iPhone, open vWorkApp, and select a job.
  2. Go to the map tab, and tap a step shown on the map.
  3. Click the button that appears above the step. Turn-by-turn navigation is then launched to guide you to that address. Depending on whether you have TomTom’s app installed or not, you’ll either see a TomTom logo, or a Google logo.

If you have TomTom’s navigation app installed (available from the appstore for $39.99 USD), then you get full voice-over, turn-by-turn, directions to the address. If you don’t, then you get the iPhone’s built-in version, which still provides directions, but no voice-over.

On Android:

  1. On Android, open vWorkApp, and select a job.
  2. Goto to the map tab, and tap a step shown on the map.
  3. Click the “Navigate here…” link that appears above the step. This launches Android’s built-in navigation app.

You may remember that some months ago we expressed our love for the Otterbox Defender iPhone case.

You may remember that some months ago we expressed our love for the Otterbox Defender iPhone case.  One of the only beefs we had at the time was that the Otterbox case was not waterproof.

It turns out we weren’t the only ones that noticed.  Just last week, Lifeproof announced their new line of iPhone cases at Launch 2011.  You can see their demonstration in the video.  (They run from about 1 min 40 to 11 min 30.)

The lifeproof case claims to be IP68.  (This means it is completely dust tight and watertight to over 1 meter.)  They also claim it will survive drops of up to 2 meters. They are not available in New Zealand yet, but we have placed an order for a unit to evaluate and we look forward to putting it through our own torture tests…
