In 1983 Motorola released the DynaTAC 8000x. This phone, which is sometimes referred to as “The Brick,” was the first FCC-approved commercial handheld cell phone. It cost $3,995, stored 30 phone numbers, and needed to be charged every eight hours. Oh yeah, and it took a full ten hours to recharge.

Today’s cell phones don’t usually take 10 hours to charge. But today’s phones often have dozens of features such as large, bright screens; 4G and/or Wi-Fi connectivity; GPS, applications, and more. Each of these features taxes the phone’s battery little by little.

Android phones, like many of today’s phones, lose battery life quickly due to their large numbers of features. Below are some tips for sustaining the battery life of Android phones.

Advice from around the Web

How to maximize battery life on your Android phone or tablet

Author: Mike Dunn

Mike says, “Almost everything about Android phones is getting bigger and better. The screens, processors, and antennas are larger and faster but one thing just can’t keep up with the rest – the battery. Batteries are being taxed further and further with all of these new technologies, and they haven’t quite caught up.”

He has the following advice:

Apps - Having multiple apps all running at once uses up your battery quickly. Turn off the apps that you aren’t using. To do this, go into your settings and tap “Applications” then tap “Manage applications.” Here you can see which apps are running. Tap the app you want to stop running, then tap “stop.”

Power control - Phones using Android version 2.1 or newer have a widget called “Power control,” which allows you to turn off GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and sync all at once. Turning these four features off could save a lot of battery power.

4G - Newer phones have a switch to turn the 4G antennae off, which uses a lot of battery power when on.

Authors: PJ Jacobowitz and Jamie Lendino

The authors of this article state that today’s phones lose battery life due to “thinner designs with less room for the battery, larger screens, faster processors, software that runs in the background, and power-hungry GPS chips … The move to 3G and 4G networks has also taken its toll.”

The authors have the following advice:

Adobe Flash - Change your phone’s settings so that Adobe Flash only runs when told to do so. To change these settings, go to your browser and tap the menu button. Then go to Settings, Enable Plug-ins and set this to On Demand.

Apps - The authors recommend keeping your apps updated because some of the newer versions of apps use less battery power than older versions. To make sure your apps are updated, go to your Market app, then tap the menu, then go to My Apps.

Microsoft Exchange - If you use Microsoft Exchange for emails, the authors of the article recommend keeping your email folder size below 150 MB. To check the size of your email folder, go to Outlook, then right-click your Inbox, then go to Properties > General > Folder Size. You can archive or delete emails to reduce the size of this email folder.

Screen brightness - The authors recommend setting your Android’s screen brightness to adjust automatically according to your environment. You can go here to get a quick tutorial on setting your screen’s brightness.

Messaging apps - The authors say “this is a big one” regarding saving battery life: Messaging apps such as Twitter, Facebook and email require lots of battery juice. You can set these apps to only pull data manually, which will save a lot of battery power.

He says that “a kernel in an operating system—in this case Android—is the component responsible for helping your applications communicate with your hardware.”

He also says “flashing a new kernel is one of the best ways to improve your phone’s performance, battery life, and even add some saucy new features.” Read the article, which is linked above, to learn more about installing a third party kernel.

Voxer is an iPhone and Android application that turns your phone into a Walkie Talkie. What I like most about it is that I can send super quick voice messages to friends. I despise talking on the phone and typing text messages takes forever. Anyone who doesn’t have time to have full conversations on the phone via talk and can’t type messages quickly would greatly benefit from using Voxer.

Why Voxer is good in business

Voxer is a free application that makes it easy to communicate with coworkers. Other than being a perfectly useful Walkie Talkie, it’s also a way to share photos, record your location, and type messages if you want to. Plus you can use group chats, which makes it very easy to share all of this information with your entire team.

Check out Voxer for the iPhone or Android mobile devices.

“If there’s one reason we have done better than our peers in the Internet space over the last six years, it is because we have focused like a laser on customer experience, and that really does matter, I think, in any business. It certainly matters online, where word of mouth is so very, very powerful.”

Jeff Bezos is the CEO of the largest online retailer in the world. How did Amazon.com become the behemoth it is today? One reason could be its wide selection of products. Another reason could be its ability to innovate and adapt to the ever-changing world. Jeff Bezos believes that Amazon’s success can mainly be attributed to its laser-like focus on exceptional customer experience and customer service.

Today, customer service can make or break a business, especially with social media technology like Twitter, Yelp and Facebook. A good customer review on Yelp could lead to exponential growth in business. A tweet by a customer who had a bad experience with a company could lead to a tarnished reputation and a huge loss in business.

The tweet heard ’round the World Wide Web

While that sounds very dramatic, there are some real-world examples of how customer service (with the help of social media technology) has had a strong impact on the reputation of a company. One example is a tweet about Morton’s the Steakhouse. Below is a summary of what happened, or you can read the full story here.

Morton’s the Steakhouse: A man named Peter, who happened to love Morton’s steaks, was flying to EWR airport in New Jersey. Before the plane took off, he jokingly tweeted that Morton’s should meet him with a steak when he landed in New Jersey:

He landed, walked into the airport, and was completely stunned to see someone from Morton’s with a perfectly cooked steak in-hand. Peter took pictures and sent this tweet:

This story of amazing customer service was a viral sensation.

Unfortunately, it’s just as easy, if not easier, to spread information about bad customer service. For example, there was a viral video of a technician sleeping on a customer’s couch instead of installing Internet and cable. Customers of this company were outraged by the poor customer service.

Five simple ways to improve customer service

1. Keep your customers in the loop.

Your company should deliver products to customers on time. However, if you can’t make a delivery on time, you should try to keep your customers informed about the steps you’re taking to make the delivery.

Here’s why:

According to a study listed in the Harvard Business Review 1, people don’t mind
waiting as long as there’s an illusion of labor. The labor illusion is “a demonstration of effort, whether literal or not, expended to meet the customer’s request.” This article goes on to quote that “many customers who endure waits but see a running tally of tasks end up happier than those who don’t have to wait at all.” In short: keep your customers happy by demonstrating the steps you’re taking to get a job done.

A simple way to achieve this is to use a GPS system to track your team’s progress. That way you can keep the customer informed with the exact location and status of each job.

Here are a few other ways to keep customers happy:

Send short, handwritten notes to customers.

Randomly give out small surprise gifts to customers, like a $5 gift card to a local coffee shop.

Give customers a few free deliveries every year.

2. Be flexible and responsive to customers.

Here are a few ways that your company can be more flexible and responsive for customers.

Create a flexible schedule with many drivers. This guarantees that drivers will be available if a schedule unexpectedly changes.

Use technology. Paper and pen can be an inefficient way to keep track of customer data. Try software that’s built to efficiently communicate and store customer data. You can also try using mobile phones, which automatically store customer contact information in a convenient location.

You can call the customer just to say, “Hey, just checking to see if you were happy with our product/service.” Be sure to really listen to your customer.

3. Keep records of customer history.

It costs about five to six times more to gain a new, first time customer than to keep a current one 2. One way to successfully retain customers is to store and analyze customer information in a consolidated location.

Huntington Bank was one company that did just that. After the US economy collapsed in 2008, they decided to adopt customer relationship management (CRM) software to help them keep records of their existing customers. This consolidated customer data helped employees serve customers better and make smarter sales decisions 3. The result? Huntington Bank saw about a 40 percent increase in lead conversions and $40 million in revenues for the quarter. The previous quarter had losses of $370 million.

You can keep records of your customers through one of the many cloud-based CRM’s available on the market now. Two we recommend are SalesForce.com and Zoho CRM. Both systems are easy to get started with and let you sign up for a free trial. SalesForce.com is more feature-rich but also more expensive. On the other hand, Zoho CRM is a good choice if your CRM needs are more basic.

4. Create camaraderie and accountability.

Malcolm Gladwell mentions the power of peer pressure in his book The Tipping Point – How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference 4. A successful tech firm called Gore Associates has a company culture that’s strongly focused on working with fairly small groups of people.

This creates camaraderie among employees. But it also creates peer pressure to work hard. Employees of Gore Associates felt peer pressure to provide quality work for their coworkers. They also felt more accountable for their work.

Your company can create accountability by having workers find one or two “buddies” within the company, and meet with them once or twice a week to discuss the progress of their projects. This will create some degree of camaraderie as the “buddies” get to know each other and thus, peer pressure to work hard.

5. Undersell, over-deliver.

This is one of the easiest ways for any company to make customers happy. How can your company undersell, then over-deliver?

Underselling and over-delivering is all about surprise; surprise your customers with little things, like delivering products at the beginning of an estimated time of arrival, or choosing to give customers a free delivery once a year, or delivering a complementary gift to random customers every few months.

Conclusion

Warren Buffet, who was ranked third wealthiest person in the world in 2011 5, said, “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it.” 6

People hurt by poor customer service have every right to turn to social media to tell their peers how they were treated. And one little tweet can have a huge impact on a company. Customer happiness is correlated with the mood of these tweets: a happy customer could tweet happy things. An angry customer could tweet awful things. Use these 5 simple tips to keep your customers, and your business, happy and successful.

Screenshots of GroundLink on the iPhone

I recently wrote about Uber changing the taxi industry. Another company called GroundLink is also doing its part to change the taxi industry. GroundLink is “an established aggregator and solutions provider to the ground travel industry.” From what I’ve read so far, it seems like it’s very similar to Uber.

Both Uber and GroundLink provide an affordable luxury passenger transportation service.

GroundLink was founded in 2003 and is currently headquartered in New York City, New York.

Price comparisons

Below I’ve compared the price of taking a “general taxicab,” an Uber car, and a GroundLink car from the vWorkApp office to the SFO airport.

According to http://www.worldtaximeter.com/san-francisco, a ride from the vWorkApp office to SFO (a distance of 20.54 kilometers or about 12.76 miles) in a general taxicab would cost $39.06. This price doesn’t include a tip. With a 15% tip, the total cost would be about $45. See the screenshot below:

Doing that same trip with Uber (and including a tip) would be $65:

Doing that same trip with GroundLink (not sure if tip is included in the price) would be between $59 and $69:

Why would someone choose Uber or GroundLink over a general taxicab?

Companies like Uber or GroundLink provide a high quality, reliable transportation service for less than the price of a limousine.

Taxicabs are a bit more affordable than Uber or GroundLink. The higher price of Uber and GroundLink is reflected in their transportation reliability and higher quality of overall service.

NOTE: This is for iOS devices including iPhones and iPad. This feature for Android devices is coming soon!

vWorkApp users can now accept and decline jobs. How does this work? A dispatcher schedules a job to a driver named Mr Driver. Mr Driver is busy and cannot accept the job, so he opens the job and presses the decline button. The dispatcher will see that the job was declined and can immediately send the job to another driver.

Setting up Accept/Decline

The current default setting for vWorkApp has the accept/decline options disabled. You must do the following steps to enable accept/decline.

Part 1 – for the dispatcher.

Go to the vWorkApp dashboard.

Go to the Admin tab.

Go to the Settings tab.

Click the radio button to the left of Enabled if you want to use accept and decline. Then be sure to click Save.

Done! You can choose to use Timer if you want a driver to accept a job within a certain amount of time e.g. within 60 seconds. If the job is not accepted within that time frame, it will automatically be declined and sent to another worker.

After the Dashboard is set up…

Part 2 – for the driver.

After the dashboard is set up, the driver must go into vWorkApp on his phone. He must have version 4.0 of vWorkApp installed on his phone for accept/decline to work. He can check this by opening the app, going into Settings, then clicking About vWork at the bottom of the screen.

Then you’ll be able to see your version of vWorkApp. See the image below:

The next step is to go to a scheduled job. Click the job. You will see the Accept and Decline buttons on the bottom of the screen!

Recently my friend and I were walking home from a bar at 3AM. We thought about getting a cab, but then we decided that we’d be safe walking home that night. But we ended up getting some very unwanted attention from some men. Perhaps we could have taken a cab home to prevent something like this from happening?

The problem was that the cab we reserved to pick us up never showed up. And we couldn’t flag any cabs down. We had to walk.

Then I heard about Uber, a passenger transport company using GPS and mobile tech to provide low-end luxury car transportation.

How Uber works

Here’s how Uber works from a passenger’s point of view: You install the Uber app on your smartphone and enter your credit card information. When you need a cab, you open up the app and set a pickup location. Then a driver will pick you up, drop you off, and automatically charge your credit card.

It’s a bit more expensive than a cab, but for me it’s more than worth the price. The car is clean, the drivers are nice, and most importantly, the service is reliable.

Uber and taxi politics

However, there are others who do not like Uber. For example, there’s this article on TechCrunch.com explaining some recent issues with Uber’s presence in Washington DC. To sum it up, Ron Linton, the head of Washington DC’s Taxi Commission, claims that Uber “is operating illegally…we plan to take steps against them.” [Source 1; below]

Uber posted this in their blog in response:

“We launched in Washington last month confident that we are compliant with the rules and regulations with the District. Prior to launching we had conversations with representatives of the taxi commission that helped us understand the regulatory landscape and convinced us that the Uber transportation alternative was legal in the city of Washington, DC.” [Source 2; below]

How Uber could change the taxi industry

Perhaps Washington DC and taxi companies are feeling threatened by Uber? Uber’s beginning to change the passenger transport industry. For example:

- New technology: Uber uses smartphones and GPS, not expensive consoles you might typically see in a cab. This new technology is relatively inexpensive and extremely accessible. Efficient, affordable technology could cut some of the costs within a taxi company.

- Increased service expectations: Uber is raising service expectations within the taxi industry. Customers now expect to be able to book a cab on their phone, and for the cab to show up in 5 minutes. Customers are also expecting to be able to rate their driver, the car, and the entire service.

- Pricing: For now Uber is more expensive than a typical taxicab. But this could change in the long run. Taxi companies might fear that, as the demand for Uber increases, the supply of Uber services will increase to a point that actually reduces the price of Uber services. Then Uber would offer a better taxi service for the same (or lower) price than a typical taxi. This could take a lot of business away from a general taxicab company.

Perhaps taxi companies need to start adopting some of Uber’s strategies regarding technology and customer service?
