One of the first questions our sales team generally get asked is ‘Do you schedule jobs to trucks or to drivers?’

Our short answer is – BOTH!

In our experience, about 80% of logistic and transport providers will want to schedule to truck, but occasionally, with highly skilled and specialty drivers, there’ll be a need to schedule to drivers instead – and we can easily help with both due to the flexibility of our platform. In a few instances, dispatchers want to schedule to both the truck and the driver, if they want to have a complete overview of the truck and driver utilization (but be prepared there is usually an additional cost associated with this option).

So why do the majority of transport providers elect to schedule their jobs to trucks. And how does it work in practice? Here are the reasons our customers tell us why it makes sense for them:

1. Guaranteed revenue - unlike drivers that can generally be used interchangeably, trucks are a fixed asset that’s specific to certain environments or load requirements.
2. Easier invoicing - as jobs are generally charged out a fixed rate based on truck capability rather than variable driver’s rates, the invoice can be easily automated and despatched immediately one job has been completed.
3. Better reporting – with fixed costs, you can get a much more accurate idea of revenue per job as it compares apples for apples. This means you have better clarity on which higher-margin jobs you should be chasing.
4. Easier scheduling – as trucks don’t have to have lunch or leave at the end of the day, you can easily schedule a truck for multiple jobs and be assured that it will be there when required.
